How to Guarantee a GREAT Day Every Day!2012.03.09. // Self Improvement

I have a standing interview every Monday morning on a radio station in the

southeast that I enjoy very much. You can imagine though that it can become

routine. So to make it a little more fun, the host nowadays doesn’t even

tell me the topic before we go live on the air – that puts some excitement

into it!

This past week he asked me the following question cold at the beginning of

the show: How can a person guarantee that they will have a great day, every

day? Now some may find that a hard question but for me it was actually a

very easy question to answer (a little harder to actually live, but not that

hard). You see, I believe in principles that govern our lives so that we can

control our destinies and create for ourselves the kind of lives that we

desire. People who live based on principles achieve what they desire while

people who live reacting to circumstances do not.

So, what were the principles that I gave to guarantee that a person could

have a GREAT day every day? Here they are:

Focus on today only. Yes, we need to have long-range goals. But our focus

must be on today. My old equation is that your short-term tasks multiplied

by time equal your long-term accomplishments. With that in mind, it is

imperative that we focus in on our short-term, to control it and make it

what will eventually, when multiplied by time, equal our long-term goals.

Don’t think about tomorrow. Today is enough trouble in and of itself. You

can work on tomorrow when it gets here. Instead, make today the best day you

have ever had. Realize that when you lay down to sleep tonight you will have

just given up the only shot you will ever have at today. Today is now gone

and it is only a memory. You only get one shot at your today so focus

intently on making it all that it possibly can be. Focus, focus, focus! When

you focus on making today great, you are on the road to guaranteeing that

you will make your day GREAT, every day!

Embrace your power to choose. Dwight D. Eisenhower said that “The history of

free men is never written by chance but by choice, their choice.” When your

today becomes your yesterday, you will look back and realize that that day

was a result of your choices and your choices only. “But wait Chris, what if

my boss controlled my day? That isn’t my choice!” But it is your choice to

work for someone else! You choice to let someone else tell you what to do.

You chose the feelings of helplessness that overwhelm you when you feel bad

that you do not control your own destiny.

The moment we realize that we have a gift from God that the animals do not

have, mainly the gift of free will and choice, and when we realize the

inherent power within that gift, and ultimately when we finally begin to

exercise that gift, then and only then, will we begin to create for

ourselves a GREAT day each and every day! Take ownership of the direction in

your life. Make your choices then carry them out!

Your attitude is up to you. Yes, bad things may happen in your day. The

pitcher for Team Circumstances may have a tremendous curveball waiting for

you and you cannot control that. You cannot control what others may do or

say. But you do control your attitude. Your attitude about whatever happens

to you is up to you.

When something happens to you, you have the choice: Will you let it get you

down and depressed, keeping you from forging ahead and making the day the

best one ever? Or will you say to yourself that no matter what happens you

are on the path to success and no obstacle will keep you from it? Will you

say, “Sometime you win and sometimes you lose – I guess this time I lost”?

Will you say, “Sometime you win and sometimes you learn – I can really learn

something from this!”?

It is all in what attitude we choose. Your attitude is up to you and when

you choose to have a great attitude, you are choosing to guarantee to have a

GREAT day, every day!

Live out and act on your priorities. So far we have dealt with internal

perspectives, and that is indeed the place to start. But the practical place

is in our priorities. If we want to make our days great, then we have to

live out those things that will by definition make our days great. And those

things are what are important to us. They are our priorities.

So each morning you start out by saying, “What things are important to me

today? What are the things I need to accomplish in order for me to lay down

tonight and know that I lived a GREAT day?” Then you put those in order of

most important to least important.

Don’t so what is fun. Don’t do what is easy. Do what is IMPORTANT! Live out

your priorities! When you do, you will guarantee that you will make your day

GREAT, every day!

Tomorrow, when you wake up, go through the four following points and see if

you don’t make tomorrow a GREAT day:

Focus on today only.

Understand that I get to choose how today will go.

Remain in a positive attitude no matter what happens.

Live out and act on my priorities.

Do this and you will guarantee a GREAT day, every day!

Today is Yesterday’s Tomorrow2012.02.22. // Self Improvement

The problem with waiting until tomorrow is that when it finally arrives, it is called today. Today is yesterday’s tomorrow. The question is what did we do with its opportunity? All too often we will waste tomorrow as we wasted yesterday, and as we are wasting today. All that could have been accomplished can easily elude us, despite our intentions, until we inevitably discover that the things that might have been have slipped from our embrace a single, unused day at a time.

Each of us must pause frequently to remind ourselves that the clock is ticking. The same clock that began to tick from the moment we drew our first breath will also someday cease.

Time is the great equalizer of all mankind. It has taken away the best and the worst of us without regard for either. Time offers opportunity but demands a sense of urgency.

When the game of life is finally over, there is no second chance to correct our errors. The clock that is ticking away the moments of our lives does not care about winners and losers. It does not care about who succeeds or who fails. It does not care about excuses, fairness or equality. The only essential issue is how we played the game.

Regardless of a person’s current age, there is a sense of urgency that should drive them into action now – this very moment. We should be constantly aware of the value of each and every moment of our lives – moments that seem so insignificant that their loss often goes unnoticed.

We still have all the time we need. We still have lots of chances – lots of opportunities – lots of years to show what we can do. For most of us, there will be a tomorrow, a next week, a next month, and a next year. But unless we develop a sense of urgency, those brief windows of time will be sadly wasted, as were the weeks and months and years before them. There isn’t an endless supply!

So as you think of your dreams and goals of your future tomorrow, begin today to take those very important first steps to making them all come to life.

Who is the Pilot?2012.02.12. // Self Improvement

It was a mild summer day in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina when I boarded United Airline flight 7318 to Washington, DC. Like usual, I promptly located my window seat, with no doubts that the pilots would safely take me to my destination.

Suddenly, as I sat gazing out of the window waiting for take-off, certain questions unfolded in my mind. I wondered, “Who are these pilots that I wholeheartedly entrust with my life?” I wondered about my surety of knowing that they would, or could take me to my destination. I also pondered on “Why it is that I — or we as individuals, trustingly and unwaveringly allow others to continuously pilot our lives without questions or reservations?”

We permit others to pilot our lives while we unquestionably find our seat near the window – just watching – watching our lives quickly pass by. We lack faith in ourselves, because too often, we allow others such as bosses, friends, family and even enemies, to navigate our lives. We allow others to pilot our lives because of their negative words. We allow others to pilot our lives because they claim to know what is best for us. We live on autopilot without a clue as to where we are headed, or how we will get there.

We must declare that we will no longer allow other people to take control of our lives – or of our future. No matter how cloudy things look, no matter how dark our past is, we must remember that God is in control.

Allow God to be your pilot — as you co-pilot your own life into a prosperous and promising future.

Declare today: I will no longer sit back and allow other people to control my life into an uncertain and discontented future. The past is behind me — and only the best is yet to come!

Tighten Your Connection2012.01.26. // Self Improvement

It was my first and last experience with a pneumatic drill, which is a jackhammer with a star bit instead of a chisel bit. We four volunteers were to dig a septic tank for the caretaker’s house at a Christian camp. After three feet of digging we hit bedrock–pre-Cambrian limestone. That’s when they showed us how to use the drill.

We bored a hole for a dynamite charge to break up the rock. The thunderous blast sent 20-pound chunks of rock a hundred feet into the air, but did not break up the rock far enough down. One young man was boring a new hole while the rest of us jammed prybars into the cracks in the bedrock to lift out chunks broken up by the first blast. That’s when it happened.

There was a loud boom. The compressor hose had popped off, and like the sprayer on a loose water hose, it snaked around wildly, showering us with bits of rock. We scrambled out of there as quick as we could. A weak connection made it inevitable that the hose would blow when the pressure was great enough.

Have you ever known anybody who blows up under pressure? Do you? I do too sometimes. But look at Jesus. It wasn’t as if He didn’t have pressure. Judean midnights are chilly in March or April, yet His sweat was like great drops of blood (Luke 22:44). The pressure was tremendous, but He used all that pressure to propel a great purpose–the redemption of the world–because He tightened the connection. “Father, remove this drink. Father, accomplish Your will over mine. Father, forgive their ignorance of what they are doing. My God, why have your abandoned me? Father, receive my spirit.”

What do you do when the pressure of your life builds and builds? Do you tighten your connection with God? Or is that the very time you let go of Him? We will know by whether there comes from you some great achievement–or a loud boom.

Being Fruitful2011.12.16. // Self Improvement

Over the years I’ve learned to challenge my audiences to turn their response to the ideas and information they receive into results. According to the Christian story, the first couple, Adam and Eve, was instructed to be fruitful – produce some results.

Fruitful is kind of an interesting word; it denotes abundance. Here’s what I think fruitful, abundance and productivity mean – to go to work on producing more than you need for yourself. I think we fulfill that command given to us so long ago to be productive, to produce far more than we need for ourselves, by blessing others, blessing our nation and blessing our enterprise.

Challenge yourself to produce more ideas than you need for yourself so you can share and give your ideas away. Produce more in terms of substance and money and treasure and all things valuable to human beings, far more than you need for yourself.

I am reminded of R.G. LeTourneau’s story, the man who built the big earth moving machines; it was his goal to someday give away 90% of his income. Giving away far more than anyone could possibly imagine. 90% is an awful lot to give away, but you should have seen the 10% that was left.

Once abundance starts to come, once someone becomes incredibly productive, it’s amazing what the numbers turn out to be. It’s amazing what it finally totals. So make sure when you are given the opportunity, that you turn your response into results, thus the chance to be more fruitful and more giving.

Love the Opportunity2011.12.13. // Self Improvement

Somebody said you have to love what you do, but that’s not necessarily true. What is true is that you have to love the opportunity. The opportunity to build life, future, health, success and fortune.

Knocking on someone’s door or making that extra call may not be something you love to do, but you love the opportunity of what might be behind that door or call.

For example, a guy says, “I’m digging ditches. Should I love digging ditches?” The answer is, “No, you don’t have to love digging ditches, but if it is your first entry onto the ladder of success, you say, ‘I’m glad somebody gave me the opportunity to dig ditches and I’m going to do it so well, I won’t be here long.’”

You can be inspired by having found something; even though you are making mistakes in the beginning and even though it is a little distasteful taking on a new discipline that you haven’t learned before. You don’t have to love it, you just have to learn to appreciate where you live, appreciate opportunity and appreciate the person who brought you the good news; that found you.

Appreciate the person who believed in you before you believed in yourself, appreciate the person who said, “Hey, if I can do it, you can do it.”

If you will embrace the disciplines associated with the new opportunity you will soon find that your self-confidence starts to grow, that you go from being a skeptic to being a believer. And soon when you go out person to person, talking to people, you will find it to be the most thrilling opportunity in the world.

Every person you meet – what could it be? Unlimited! Maybe a friend for life. The next person could be an open door to retiring. The next person could be a colleague for years to come. It’s big time stuff. And sometimes in the beginning when we are just getting started we don’t always see how big it is.

So, before you are tempted to give up or get discouraged, remember all success is based on long term commitment, faith, discipline, attitude and a few stepping stones along the way. You might not like the stone you are on right now, but it’s sure to be one of the stones that lead to great opportunities in the future.

Songs of Life2011.11.17. // Self Improvement

I imagine when we die we find out how in-tune with our hearts we should have been. Not an easy thing to do with all our mere mortal vices getting in the way.

How do we rise above what we are? Can we elevate ourselves and look back down on our lives to see what needs more attention, or less? What’s important, what’s a waste of time?

I’ve managed to step onto my own shoulders for a better look, through my music. As a songwriter I frequently, and most certainly unintentionally, write about feelings and experiences from my own life. Sometimes I don’t recognize a connection until I’m performing the song or listening to it later on.

Where all these ideas comes from I can’t be sure. I always thought that I had to go through many long years of suffering before I could be worth anything as writer, but I found that my song lyrics, and my other scribblings, affect people.

Real writers, those with a genuine knack, are born to be what they are. Maybe sometimes people get more than their fair share of talents. A cruel joke by God? Maybe a test. Which talent will be used the most to affect the rest of the world?

I didn’t wake up one day and say I want to write songs, or even these observations. If I did I would likely be a lousy songwriter, or writer in general. Instead I have found that, when inspired, I have a knack for this writing thing. People who have heard my music believe it’s among the best they’ve heard, and they always comment on the poignancy of my lyrics. One fellow who bought my CD remarked, “…lyrically, it’s a killer!”

I appreciate these remarks. They make me examine myself more closely, to evaluate my work more carefully, because if people are this taken with my lyrics I must be extra careful what I write the next time around. My words can have great influence, so I want to make sure it’s a positive one.

As I look back on my accomplishments, which I still don’t think are much (call me humble), I start seeing myself in a different light. Not the kid who was made fun of in school, or the punk who couldn’t get his head out of you-know-where quick enough to save himself some real heartache. But I see myself as a growing, learning, human stumbling through a mistake-ridden life that’s finally smoothing out in the long run, and there’s plenty more to run, so just imagine how much smoother it can get!

Looking down, even in at yourself, however you manage to do it, can help you elevate your position within your own mind. Since we are the masters of our own destiny, isn’t that the right place to start? See yourself as the person you want to be.

By examining ourselves we can also learn how much heart we put into living our lives. The more heart that goes in, the less mundane your life will be. But you can’t keep your heart to yourself. No light shines in a room without windows, no voice can travel beyond the walls. Affect the world around you and see how the light shines in.

How do we rise above what we are? We rise to what we want to be.

Leading a World Class Life2011.10.24. // Self Improvement

Every four years the world is given the gift of the Olympics. For a few weeks nations lay down their arms and come together to let their world class athletes compete on a level playing field to see who the best is in the many events. Such amazing athleticism was on display the past few weeks. It boggles the mind what these young men and women can accomplish with their bodies. Great feats of skill and determination bring them to the pinnacle of athletic achievement. Incredible.

As I think about what it takes to become a world class athlete capable of competing at the Olympic level, I realize that there are some foundational lessons for all of us to learn as it relates to becoming world class in whatever we set our hands to.

The secret of how these athletes became world class is found in the combination of two fundamental ideas: Desire and dedication.

A 22 year old man doesn’t simply wake up one day and find that he is on the Olympic basketball team. No, it started years before. In fact, it probably started when he was only six or seven years old. Maybe his father took him to a basketball game and that little boy said, “Someday daddy, I am going to be a basketball player.” That was the first sign of desire. Desire is key. World class people start with desire. They have to at some point “want it”.

But we all know people who dream of big things but never accomplish those dreams, don’t we? Why is that? After all, they have desire. They want it. But the engine that drives the dream is dedication. Desire tells you what you want, while dedication is what will get it for you.

Someone may see a young gymnast and say, “Wow, that looks easy.” What they don’t see or perhaps overlook is the years of practice. The years of getting up at 4:30 every morning and going to the gym before going to school. It is the

dedication of the young athlete, the many times of failing in practice, the many times of falling off the equipment and faithfully getting back on that turns a wisher into a world class doer.

A person with desire but no dedication will never achieve much. You must have the powerful combination of both.

So let’s take a closer look at each of these and gain some insight into what desire and dedication are all about.

Desire. There are three parts to desire:

. Dreaming

. The Vision

. Focus

First, is dreaming. Have you let yourself dream lately? Just sit down and begin to imagine all of the incredible possibilities your life could become? Spend some time just dreaming.

Next is the vision. Once you dream, you begin to cut back on all of the possibilities and narrow it to what possibility it is that you really want. You begin to create a vision for your life. You begin to see it as you want it.

Lastly under desire is focus. Once you have the vision, you have to really focus in on that dream. This is where you get really specific about what your life is going to look like.

Now for dedication. There are also three parts:

. The Plan

. Beginning

. Perseverance

First is the plan. Without a plan you will drift to and fro. You will certainly not carry out your dream if you do not have a plan. So write it down. Set your goals. Know what you want and how you are going to get there.

Second is the beginning. This may sound simple and yet it is simply profound. Many people have a dream and they even have a plan, but they never begin. So simple: Just start. The first step on the long journey is still just one step. If you have a dream and a plan, take a step in the right direction.

Lastly is to persevere. Every road to every dream has a section or sections that is hard to travel. Every great dream will encounter difficulty. The question isn’t whether or not you will encounter trouble, but how you will respond to trouble. Will you quit when the going gets tough or will you persevere? I have found that every successful person I know, myself included, has encountered problems along the way that tempted them to quit. Yet they persevered and achieved their dream.

Let’s take a look at the progression. As you do, think about where you are in the progression of becoming a world class dream pursuer.

1. Dream

2. Create a vision

3. Focus the vision

4. Develop a plan

5. Begin to pursue the dream

6. Persevere

Friends, I hope for you the fulfillment of every dream that you have. That is what life is about isn’t it? But to do so, I know that you will have to combine your desire with good old dedication. And when you combine those two, you will be well on your way to leading a world class life!

How I Made $10,000 In One Day By Swimming Underwater!2011.10.01. // Self Improvement

“Without health, life is not life; it is only a state of languor and suffering,” Rabelais

If you want to be wealthy, it’s best to get healthy. A salubrious lifestyle is worth the effort.

Here’s the wisdom:

You need good health to think clearly, act intelligently, and schmooze diligently.

Usually, the wealthiest people are entrepreneurs. This endeavor to create everything from scratch takes an enormous toll on your health. And if you’re not looking after your health, you’re sabotaging your progress.

It works the same for employees, though. The more sick days you have, the fewer days you get paid.

Sometimes, however, when you’re very healthy, magic happens.

Many years ago, when I lived in Florida, I worked as a retail clerk in the Orlando Mall. I sold luggage for Burdines, a department store.

One day, I found this great book about the benefit of underground swimming for the heart and lungs. Since I had a huge pool in the apartment complex I lived in, I enthusiastically began to train myself to swim underwater. I got so good at it that I could do two whole laps underwater. I developed an enviable robustness, stamina, and strength.

After about a month at my new sport, our store had a big sale. During that sale, I was so energized, so full of vitality and good cheer, that at the end of the day I had done $10,000 in sales. This was unheard of for a single department, run by a single person, for one day.

My department manager awarded me a fluffy green beach towel! (I still have it with me.)

How did my sales skills shoot up to such an astonishing level? Quite simply, I had accidentally learned how to breathe deeper and fuller and my body was in a state of vibrant energy.

Good health spills over into every aspect of life. Your relationship with yourself improves. Your relationship with others improves. And your work in the world, whatever it is, takes a quantum leap.

We take our health for granted until we lose it. We need to guard our health more than our money, for when we are healthy, the money follows.

It’s easy to acquire health information on how to make your brain sharper, your lungs clearer, and your muscles more able. The bane of most people, a heavy, tired body will not be yours if you choose a healthy lifestyle of nutritious food, exercise, deep relaxation and experiencing the great outdoors.
